Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Larry L. Mullis, Warrant Officer, W1, United States Army, 175 th Avn Co, Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 5 July 1966 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Warrant Officer Mullis distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of a UH-1D helicopter during an airmobile operation approximately ten kilometers southwest of Vinh Long. During the operation, three critically wounded Vietnamese soldiers required immediate evacuation. Although the two previous lifts had come under intense enemy ground fire, and another aircraft attempting the evacuation had been forced out by the heavy volume of fire, he volunteered to attempt the mission. Completely disregarding the enemy fire he flew into the landing zone and set his ship down near the wounded men. Loading the men aboard required that he hold his ship stationary for approximately three minutes, with enemy fire striking the ground all around him. Upon departure with the wounded, the aircraft was struck so seriously that it was grounded upon completion of the mission. Warrant Officer Mullis demonstrated outstanding courage, sound judgment and devotion to duty and his valorous actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
