Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain John E. Morris for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight and serving as Lead Pilot of Squadron formations on heavy bombardment missions against the enemy. Captain Morris, demonstrating exceptional piloting ability, led combat formations on successful attacks against Hamburg, Germany, 31 December 1944; Hanau, Germany, 5 January 1945; and Gottbus, Germany, 15 February 1945, despite vicious attacks by enemy fighters on one occasion and anti-aircraft fire on each mission. The courage, flying skill and leadership displayed by Captain Morris on these occasions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
