CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT:  Vietnam

Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain John H. Moran for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a B-52 Radar Navigator over Southeast Asia on 25 August 1972. On that date, as lead Radar Navigator of a cell of B-52’s, Captain Moran’s cell was diverted to a high priority target. Captain Moran detected a significant error in the new target data which could have caused the cell to strike friendly forces. While directing the cell through an area of intense thunderstorms, Captain Moran resolved the conflict, intercepted the bomb run, and insured a successful ordnance delivery onto the assigned target. These distinctive achievements were accomplished while engaged in hazardous operations requiring frequent and repeated exposure to hostile ground fire. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Moran reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
