CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: Vietnam

Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Bernard W. Milloy for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam on 17 January 1970. Warrant Officer Milloy distinguished himself while serving as Pilot of a UH-1H lift helicopter in Thua Thien Province, Republic of Vietnam. Members of a long-range reconnaissance team were pinned down by hostile small arms fire in the A Shau Valley, and Warrant Officer Milloy volunteered to extract them. He piloted his aircraft into the pickup zone which was completely surrounded by the enemy and was under intense, hostile small-arms fire. Tree stumps in the landing zone made it impossible to land, forcing Warrant Officer Milloy to hover several feet above the ground. While maintaining a steady hover, he directed the fire of his door gunners and the supporting armed helicopters enabling the team members to board the aircraft. He then took off through the dense foliage and despite heavy enemy fire completed the mission. Warrant Officer Milloy's personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
