Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Specialist Four William M. Miller for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Specialist Four Miller distinguished himself while serving as Crew Chief Warrant Officer aboard a lightly armed transport helicopter performing an emergency extraction of a company of friendly soldiers who were pinned down by the enemy near Bao Trai, Republic of Vietnam. On final approach to the landing zone, his flight was met with an intense hail of enemy automatic weapons fire from the tree line surrounding the area. Just before his ship touched down, he was struck in the left wrist by an enemy round. Ignoring the intense pain of his wound, he again grasped the weapon which had been knocked from his hands and continued to suppress the enemy fire. As his ship began lifting out of the area, one of the friendly troops on the ground grabbed onto the left skid of the aircraft and was carried out of the area in this manner. In spite of his painful wound, he hung outside the aircraft and single handedly pulled the friendly soldier inside the ship. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
