Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Melvin K. Meyer for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as Bombardier of a B-17 airplane on bombing missions over Germany, 21 January 1945, 16 February 1945, and 22 February 1945. On these operations, Lieutenant Meyer performed his duties in an outstanding manner, contributing in large measure to the success attained by the formation in which he flew. On 21 January 1945, Lieutenant Meyer expertly bombed the last resort target visually when the primary objective was found to be obscured by cloud. On 16 February 1945, he dexterously accomplished the sighting operation and released the bombs with exceptional accuracy in the target area. On 22 February 1945, Lieutenant Meyer effected the bomb run with preeminent skill. In the face of extensive ground haze, bombs were dropped in a highly destructive pattern. The courage, coolness and skill displayed by this officer on these occasions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
