Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Martin W. Mechling for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an F-100 Tactical Fighter Pilot near Thien Ngon, Republic of Vietnam on 3 September 1968. On that date, Major Mechling was scrambled at night to provide close air support to friendly forces defending the Thien Ngon Special Forces Camp from an aggressive attack by hostile forces. In spite of poor target illumination, hazardous terrain, closing weather, low fuel and intense ground fire, he destroyed a large caliber gun emplacement which had earlier downed two United States Air Force aircraft and was seriously hampering defense of the Thien Ngon Camp. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Major Mechling reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
