Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain William D. McWilliams III for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-4C Aircraft Commander in the Republic of Vietnam on 28 December 1965. On that date, Captain McWilliams led an extremely successful close air support strike. Captain McWilliams' action prevented hostile forces from overrunning a friendly Special Forces camp. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain McWilliams reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
