Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Thomas J. McNamara for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action, above and beyond the call of duty. These men distinguished themselves by exceptionally valorous actions while serving aboard a helicopter providing general support for friendly elements near Tanh Linh. A friendly element had been ambushed by enemy forces and had sustained numerous casualties. These men attempted a medical evacuation without armed helicopter fire support. Completely exposed to the hostile fire, they guided the aircraft to the landing zone. With complete disregard for their own personal safety they continuously located and directed suppressive fire into the enemy positions, thereby enabling the friendly unit to gain fire superiority over the hostile force. Their superior abilities contributed in the successful extraction of the wounded troops and aided in the defeat of the enemy force. Their actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon themselves, their unit and the United States Army.
