Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer Donald M. McKeough for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Chief Warrant Officer McKeough distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 29 July 1969 while serving as aircraft commander of a helicopter while picking up a Ranger Team from the An Loa Valley. At the time the pick up was made, the team was in direct contact with the enemy. After flying over the area to establish visual contact with the team, with complete disregard for the lack of gunship support, prevaling winds and poor light conditions, the aircraft was maneuvered into position for the pick up from an extremely small landing zone that required a slow, vertical landing maneuver. The aircraft was held at a hover until the five wounded men were recovered and then they were flown to the medical treatment facility at Landing Zone English. Chief Warrant Officer McKeough's outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
