Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Fredrick T. McGuire for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a UH-1N Helicopter Gunship Aircraft Commander near Tieu Atar, Republic of Vietnam, on 9 January 1972. On that date, Captain McGuire was instrumental in the rescue of a surrounded Long Range Reconnaissance Team deep in hostile territory. Despite heavy automatic weapons fire, Captain McGuire continued to attack hostile positions until the hostile fire was silenced and all team members rescued without injury or damage to aircraft. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain McGuire reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
