Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Technical Sergeant Gerald E. McGuire for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as crew of a B-17 type aircraft. On 21 September 1944, this gallant crew participated in a bombing mission against vital strategic enemy installations in Hungary. Despite severe and adverse weather conditions they brought their ship through for a highly successful bombing run. Over the target their aircraft was severely damaged by intense heavy and accurate anti-aircraft fire and four (4) of the crew members were seriously wounded, two (2) fatally. A large hole was torn through the waist of the aircraft, threatening to sever the plane in half. Additional hits in the bomb bay severed vital controls and destroyed the oxygen system. Undaunted by the extremely unairworthy condition of the ship, displaying outstanding courage and determination, realizing the inability of the wounded members to abandon the ship, the entire crew determined to try and bring their ship through to base. Despite continued adverse weather, flying alone through enemy territory through their exceptional teamwork and professional skill, they brought their crippled ship through for a safe landing at base, where on landing their aircraft broke in half. By their outstanding courage, tenacity and devotion to duty, as evidenced throughout their brilliant combat careers, these men have reflected great credit upon themselves and the Armed Forces of the United States of America.
