AWARDED DFC:
1
CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: WWII
MODEL: P-38
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Jack H. McFarland for extraordinary achievement in aerial flight as Pilot of a P-38 type aircraft. On 21 June 1944, Lieutenant McFarland participated in a weather reconnaissance mission over Austria. Shortly after leaving base, severe and adverse weather conditions were encountered which threatened to preclude the success of his mission. Although flying alone on instruments, deep into enemy territory, Lieutenant McFarland flew through solid overcast with zero visibility for over two (2) hours. Arriving at the target, he broke through a section of limited visibility and, despite the presence of heavy anti-aircraft installations and patrolling enemy fighters, he managed to complete his mission and bring his plane back to base with the necessary data, which was of vital importance for subsequent operations. By his outstanding courage, professional skill, and devotion to duty, as demonstrated throughout forty (40) combat missions against the enemy and under all conditions of hazard, Lieutenant McFarland has reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States of America.
