Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Technical Sergeant Frank X. McCawley for extraordinary achievement while serving as Radio Operator Gunner of a Flying Fortress on many high altitude heavy bombardment missions over enemy-occupied Continental Europe. By expertly operating his radio equipment during long hours of combat and by the deft handling of his gun in warding off vicious fighter attacks, Sergeant McCawley made a substantial contribution to the success of these operations. The heroic determination and disregard of personal safety displayed by Sergeant McCawley on all these occasions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Military Forces of the United States.
