Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Richard D. McCaig for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer McCaig distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 25 February 1969 while serving with Company A, 123rd Aviation Battalion. On that date, an element of the 1st Cavalry came under heavy fire near Tam Ky, and two tanks of the unit were assaulted by the Viet Cong. While the tankers fought off the attack, Warrant Officer McCaig maneuvered his command and control helicopter over the area allowing his gunners to support the tanks with machine gun fire. During the ensuing battle, he continued to provide supporting fire for the ground forces and marked attacking routes for the troops. Disregarding the danger involved, Warrant Officer McCaig landed his aircraft in the battle area and evacuated a seriously wounded soldier. His timely and courageous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and the reduction of casualties. Warrant Officer McCaig's personal heroism, professional competence and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the American Division and the Unitd States Army.
