Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Geary D. Martin for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Major Martin distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of an assault helicopter company from a command and control helicopter in support of friendly infantry. During a ten-ship insertion, the ground forces made contact with a large enemy force. A decision was made to completely cordon the area with airmobile assaults. Major Martin directed a total of eight insertions, with two being accomplished during darkness. Each insertion met with furious enemy resistance, and only through his employment of his armed helicopter platoon and smoke ships to screen the slicks, were successful insertions made. As night approached, he was in constant contact with the Air Force forward air controller and a flare ship, utilizing their capabilities to best advantage, and he frequently flew low level over the enemy positions to accurately assess the situation. His aircraft was repeatedly fired on throughout the operation and sustained one hit. Major Martin's brilliant leadership ability contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
