Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Lawrence W. Markham for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Navigator, KC-135A, in Southeast Asia on 12 August 1972. On that date Captain Markham's professional knowledge and skill made possible a rendezvous with four tactical fighters which were in an emergency fuel state. The rendezvous, which saved the aircraft, was accomplished in marginal weather conditions and was exposed to hostile air and ground activity. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Markham reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
