CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT:  Vietnam
MODEL:  UH-1C

Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Clifton L. Malm for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Warrant Officer Clifton L. Malm distinguished himself while serving as a pilot of an armed UH-1C helicopter supporting a twilight insertion of allied troops near the city of Dalat. While covering the extraction of a flight of troop ships under fire, his ship was hit by intense ground fire and his wingman shot down. Despite this, he successfully covered the troop ships to safety. He then attacked, with his damaged aircraft, the enemy bunkers. He continued his repeated and dogged attacks against the fortified positions diverting enemy fire from the downed crew until another fire team arrived. Only after being ordered to desist did Warrant Officer Malm cease his relentless defense of his downed comrades. Through his gallant actions and perserverence, he contributed immeasurably to the successful rescue. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
