Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to John B. Madden, W01, 100B Co C (Aslt Hel), 101st Avn Bn (Aslt Hel), (Ambl), (WAB3CO), Republic of Vietnam, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in support of Army of the Republic of Vietnam troops in Laos. Warrant Officer Madden distinguished himself on 3 March 1971 while serving as pilot of a UH-1H utility helicopter during combat assaults into Laos. During the briefing, Warrant Officer Madden was informed of the heavy concentration of enemy soldiers and positions in the area. As he approached the landing zone, Warrant Officer Madden came under intense anti-aircraft and small arms fire from numerous enemy positions. Subjecting himself to the intense barrage, he directed the suppressive fire of his crew while continuing his descent onto the landing zone. After the troops were inserted, Warrant Officer Madden skillfully piloted his aircraft through the enemy fire. Throughout the day, he performed sorties into the besieged area. His actions were instrumental in the successful establishment of Fire Base Lolo. Warrant Officer Madden’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
