CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: -
MODEL: CH-3E
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Colonel Ernest L. MacQuarrie for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a CH-3E helicopter Pilot in Southeast Asia on 25 March 1969. On that date, Colonel MacQuarrie's aircraft was damaged during the exfiltration of a combat assault force of over 200 friendly forces deep within hostile territory by a barrage of ground fire which wounded the Aircraft Commander. Colonel MacQuarrie took command of the aircraft, prevented it from landing in hostile territory and flew sixty miles back to a friendly base, thereby saving the lives of his crew, averting capture by hostile forces, and preserving a valuable aircraft. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Colonel MacQuarrie reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
