Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Robert P. Mack for heroism while participating in aerial flight. Captain Mack distinguished himself by heroic actions on 5 September 1969 while serving as a Pilot with D Troop, 3d Squadron 4th Cavalry in the Republic of Vietnam. When elements of the 2d Battalion, 27th Infantry came in contact with a large enemy force, Captain Mack immediately flew to the contact area in order to provide aerial support for the ground unit. Upon arriving on station, Captain Mack's helicopter came under intense enemy fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, Captain Mack exposed himself to the hail of fire as he made a low-level gun run over the battle area, placing accurate fire on the hostile emplacements. Throughout the battle, Captain Mack continued to expose himself to the enemy fire as he engaged the enemy machine gun positions. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and the thwarting of the hostile force. Captain Mack's bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
