Citation:  1.) The President, under the provisions of Army Regulation 600-45 as amended, and pursuant to authority vested in me by the Commanding General, Mediterranean Theater of Operations. Ward Macauley, First Lieutenant, Air Corps, 47th Bombardment Group (L) is awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross: For extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as bombardier In A-20 and A-26 types aircraft. On 19 April 1945. Lieutenant Macauley flew in a night attack upon heavily fortified may buildings at Sassuolo, Italy. Displaying superior professional skill sad resourcefulness, Lieutenant Macauley guided his pilot through adverse weather to the briefed initia1 point. Then setting course for a perfect run over the objective. Lieutenant Macauley released his bombs with devastating effect on these vital military positions. On more than fifty combat missions, his outstanding proficiency and steadfast devotion to duty have reflected great credit up himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
