Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to David Ludwigsen, Specialist Four, United States Army, 117th Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter), Republic of Vietnam, 19 March 1970, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: David Ludwigsen, Specialist Four, distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving aboard an armed helicopter conducting fire-fly operations near Duc Hue. When the light ship of the heavy fire team came under intense anti-aircraft fire from numerous fortified ground positions, he opened fire on the enemy, attempting to draw the fire away from the ambushed light ship. He returned the hail of fire directed at them with accuracy, suppressing the enemy gunners, thereby saving the ambushed light ship from further damage. Despite the numerous hits on his aircraft, he continued to lay down a barrage of effective fire that silenced one position after another. When completely expended, he and the team returned to Duc Hoa to refuel and rearm. After thoroughly checking his aircraft over, he volunteered to return to the area of contact. He was met with the same hail of enemy firepower as before, but with determination and perseverance of an outstanding aviator, he displayed a degree of personal courage that marked the success of the mission. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
