Citation: 1.) The Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. First Lieutenant Lorentz distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as the aircraft commander of the lead aircraft on a combat assault to reinforce friendly troops. While approaching the hostile area he was informed that the ground forces were in heavy contact with an unknown size enemy force. Undaunted, and thinking only of the beleaguered ground troops, he continued his approach, skillfully flying his aircraft as near as possible to the friendly forces. Upon reaching the landing zone, he turned his aircraft so that it would shield the other aircraft and troops. As a result, his aircraft became the target of a volley of enemy machine gun fire, so intense that Lieutenant Lorentz was seriously wounded. Now in great pain, but knowing the importance of reinforcing the ground element he landed his crippled aircraft and discharged his troops. He then instructed the pilot to take control of the aircraft as he calmly directed the departure of the flight. His aircraft was landed in a nearby open area and he was immediately med-e-vaced. Lieutenant Lorentz' bravery and calm courage, coupled wtih his highly skilled flying ability was directly responsible for saving the lives of numerous allied soldiers. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himelf, his unit, and the United States Army.
