Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Jerry E. Liner, WO1, Co C, 159th Avn Bn (Aslt Spt Hel) (Ambl), Republic of Vietnam, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in support of Army of the Republic of Vietnam troops in Laos. Warrant Officer Liner distinguished himself on 4 March 1971 while serving as pilot of a CH-47 cargo helicopter during combat operations in Laos. Earlier in the day, a CH-47 helicopter was downed during a resupply mission. Upon arriving at the crash site, Warrant Officer Liner evaluated the damage and directed his maintenance crew to prepare it for flight. Warrant Officer Liner skillfully guided the aircraft through an area of known enemy concentration to Khe Sanh. His actions saved the aircraft from being totally destroyed by enemy troops in the area. Warrant Officer Liner’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
