Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Second Lieutenant Robert J. Lewis for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of an A-20 type aircraft. On 15 April 1945, Lieutenant Lewis flew in a night attack upon enemy military installations at Vignola, Italy. Displaying superior flying ability and resourcefulness, as he skillfully maneuvered through adverse weather upon the approach to the target, Lieutenant Lewis’ perfect run over the objective enabled his bombardier to release his bombs with devastating effect on this vital enemy stronghold. On more than sixty combat missions, his outstanding proficiency and steadfast devotion to duty have reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
