2.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (First Oak Leaf Cluster) to First Lieutenant Richard E. Jonas for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an F-4D Pilot in Southeast Asia on 17 May 1968. On that date, Lieutenant Jonas participated in a flight of two F-4s that were instructed to attack a storage area and gun positions along a heavily defended, vital line of communication and supply leading into South Vietnam. Despite the approach of darkness and poor visibility and extremely intense, heavy, accurate antiaircraft artillery fire, Lieutenant Jonas heroically pressed his attack, making multiple passes until all his ordnance had been expended. This daring and heroic attack resulted in the damage and destruction or numerous gun positions. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Jonas reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
