Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Frederick M. Johnson for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a F-102A Pilot at Danang Air Base, Republic of Vietnam and Don Muang Air Base, Thailand, from 23 August 1968 to 18 June 1969. During this period, Major Johnson flew extremely hazardous missions through adverse weather conditions and attack. In spite of this he superbly accomplished these highly intricate and hazardous missions in support of free world forces combatting aggression. Through his personal bravery and energetic application of his knowledge and skill he significantly furthered the goal of the United States in Southeast Asia. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Johnson reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
