Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Francis C. Leith, Jr., 282d Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter), United States Army, Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 9 September 1970 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Warrant Officer Leith distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of the command and control aircraft on a combat assault 3 miles north of Pein Ban Province. Having spotted numerous enemy troops, he quickly warned the advancing Allied ground forces of their positions. At the risk of his own life, he braved intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons, and anti-aircraft fire while repeatedly flying over the battle site at a dangerously low altitude to direct the friendly troops as they surrounded and captured the enemy. Despite a low cloud ceiling and heavy rainstorms throughout the area, Warrant Officer Leith remained on station several hours until the mission was completed and the friendly troops withdrew. Displaying exceptional bravery and persistence in completing this mission, he contributed greatly to its highly successful completion. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
