Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Richard D. Joyce, United States Marine Corps, for heroism while participating in aerial flight while serving as an AH-6 fully mission qualified Pilot-in-Command and Air Mission Commander for a Joint Task Force in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. On 2 March 2007, Major Joyce provided precision fire support for a ground force in contact with a determined enemy despite receiving effective enemy fire. Major Joyce remained in contact after is wingman's aircraft was damaged by hostile fire and conducted numerous close engagements against multiple vehicle mounted air defense artillery systems. His actions enabled the ground force to break contact and move to more defensible terrain to prepare for extraction. By his courage, distinctive accomplishments, and superior airmanship, Major Joyce reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. The Combat Distinguishing Device is authorized.
