2.)
The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Francis A. Jones for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a P-47 type aircraft. On 8 September 1944, while leading a flight of four Thunderbolts on an armed reconnaissance over the Belfort area in France, Lieutenant Jones sighted two locomotives pulling flat cars loaded with heavy trucks. Although his aircraft was seriously damaged by flak, Lieutenant Jones, displaying great determination and courage, returned three times with his flight to strafe the target, destroying one locomotive and twelve trucks. As his flight cleared the target area, additional trucks were catching fire and exploding. The courage, proficiency, and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Jones on this mission reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
