Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Thomas E. Lasser for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Lasser distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 12 July 1970 while serving as Aircraft Commander of a CH-47 helicopter with the 132d Aviation Company. On that date, Captain Lasser was airlifting an element of friendly ground troops onto a landing zone north of Kham Duc. As he approached the area, with its unfamiliar terrain and undisclosed enemy positions, he skillfully landed the aircraft on the treacherous landing zone. While the troops were disembarking, the helicopter came under intense hostile fire. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he waited until the ground element had reached secure positions before he lifted off. In a subsequent resupply mission, Captain Lasser unhesitatingly volunteered to carry vitally needed ammunition to the beleaguered fire base. Ignoring the danger involved, he again landed under heavy fire. Despite the hostile rounds impacting near him, he calmly directed the unloading of the ordnance. Through his timely actions, he contributed greatly to the overall success of the mission and served as an inspiration to his entire crew. Captain Lasser’s personal heroism, professional competence, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself the Americal Division, and the United States Army.
