Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant David L. Johnston for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Aircraft Commander, C-123K Provider, at Loc Ninh Special Forces Camp, Republic of Vietnam, on 13 September 1969. On that date, realizing the critical need for his cargo of jet aviation fuel at this remote outpost, Lieutenant Johnston braved ground fire and a mortar attack to accomplish his mission. His aircraft received two hits as he took off from Loc Ninh after his successful delivery of the vital cargo. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Johnston reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
