Citation:  1.) The Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Lane distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 6 August 1969, while serving with Company A, 228th Aviation Battalion (Assault Support Helicopter) (Airmobile) during a combat resupply mission near Song Be, Republic of Vietnam. Already grounded due to adverse weather conditions, Captain Lane volunteered to fly a mission at low altitude across known enemy terrain. While enroute to a landing zone, the aircraft came under intense enemy fire and received serious damage. Captain Lane displayed great personal courage as he established communications with the landing zone, oriented its position, and directed the aircraft towards the landing zone, despite his vision being obscured by the searing oil of ruptured lines. Upon reaching the landing zone, Captain Lane displayed exceptional aviation professionalism as he landed the huge aircraft in an extremely limited area. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
