Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Henry W. Land II for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action, above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Land distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 28 December 1967, while serving as a Pilot of a UH-1H Medical Evacuation helicopter, during a combat mission in the Republic of Vietnam. When a request was received for a medical evacuation mission, Lieutenant Land volunteered for the hazardous mission. Due to the thick foliage, it was necessary to hover the aircraft over the besieged unit while the wounded soldiers were extracted with a hoist. Although the hovering helicopter was extremely vulnerable to hostile fire, Lieutenant Land remained calm as he expertly maneuvered the aircraft over the treetops. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
