Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Colonel Carl C. Johnson for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty on 9 August 1969. Lieutenant Colonel Johnson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as the Observer of an O-1 aircraft during a mission southeast of Vo Dat. He noticed a unit of Allied forces under attack by an enemy force. He immediately called in gunships and a medevac helicopter. His aircraft circled overhead for over two hours in extremely bad weather directing the gunships and medevac. All aircraft were continuously under fire, and without his astute observation the infantry unit would have been overrun. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
