CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: WWII
MODEL: P-51
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Raymond H. Lahmeyer for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight over Formosa, on 1 April 1945. Captain Lahmeyer led a formation of 8 P-51 fighters on a strike against Japanese locomotives, trucks, busses, and power stations on Formosa. When he approached the target, he directed 4 fighters to fly as cover while he led the other 4 in a strafe. On this attack his fighters destroyed 13 trucks, 2 busses, 2 locomotives and 3 box cars. In addition, they killed many enemy personnel and damaged a power station, a factory, and a large building. Captain Lahmeyer himself accounted for both locomotives and for 7 trucks, 2 of which were loaded with personnel. In spite of intense anti-aircraft fire and adverse weather, the flight was completed without damage to any of the fighters. The outstanding courage and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Lahmeyer during this flight are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army Air Forces.
