Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Danny E. Lacy, First Lieutenant, ARMOR, United States Army, 229 th Aslt Hel Bn, 3d Bde (SEP), 1 st CAV DIV (AM), for heroism, while participating in aerial flight, evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam: Lieutenant Lacy distinguished himself on 11 and 12 April 1972 while serving as aircraft commander of a UH-1H helicopter during a mission to insert 650 South Vietnamese soldiers into the besieged provincial capital of An Loc, Republic of Vietnam. Enemy tanks, two enemy divisions, and numerous anti-aircraft positions had mounted a savage attack and friendly reinforcements were badly needed. While enroute to An Loc, it was learned that the landing zone was under heavy fire from enemy rockets, mortars and artillery. Realizing the importance of the mission, it was decided to continue in spite of the overwhelming odds. After a low-level approach and landing at An Loc, the Vietnamese soldiers disembarked and the aircraft departed the area with small arms fire tracing the path of Lieutenant Lacy's aircraft. Despite extensive damage to several aircraft during the mission, he continued to support the operation by returning with additional reinforcements. Lieutenant Lacy's personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
