Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Bruce N. Kuyatt, United States Navy, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as the Pilot of an A-6E INTRUDER aircraft in Attack Squadron 35 embarked in USS Saratoga (CV 60) on 17 January 1991. Lieutenant Kuyatt was the second section lead of a four plane A-6E bombing element attacking H-3 airfield in Western Iraq, one of the enemy's most heavily defended air bases. Ingressing at low altitude on a moonless night, he courageously, and with total disregard for his personal safety, maneuvered through a seemingly impregnable wall of anti-aircraft fire and surface to air missiles. At times flying at altitudes of less than 200 feet, Lieutenant Kuyatt bravely avoided the barrage fire, delivering his ordnance with devastating effect directly on the airfield ramp area. His valiant actions in the withering hail of enemy fire ensured neutralization of this vital airfield. Lieutenant Kuyatt's daring actions, superb airmanship, and loyal devotion to duty in the face of hazardous flying conditions reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
