Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant (JG) Robert Max Klose, United States Naval Reserve, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as pilot of a United States Navy Night Fighter plane on 25 July 1945. On Task Force Dusk Combat Air Patrol, he climbed to attack singly a formation of enemy planes consisting of three fighters and one torpedo plane. Disregarding the enemy fighters, he pressed home his attack on the torpedo plane and shot it down in flames. He then aggressively searched for the enemy fighters until ordered to return to base. By his expert gunnery, airmanship and determination he prevented a possible enemy attack on the Task Force. His courage and skill on this occasion were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
