CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: Vietnam

Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Robert E. Barr for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller in Southeast Asia, on 7 January 1972. On that date, while piloting his lightly armed reconnaissance aircraft over a heavily defended waterway in Southern Laos, Captain Barr discovered eleven supply-laden boats moving south. Despite intense anti-aircraft artillery fire and extremely poor weather, Captain Barr directed tactical fighters onto the target destroying ten boats and two and one-half tons of supplies, damaging one boat, and had a probable thirty-three hostile personnel killed by air. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Barr reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
