MODEL: AC-124
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Jerome F. King. Captain King distinguished himself by extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight from Westover Air Force Base, Massachusetts to Lajes Field, Azores on 24 October 1960. On that date, Captain King was Commander of AC-124 aircraft heavily loaded with 25,200 pounds of classified explosives, four passengers and crew. Shortly after takeoff, it became necessary to feather the number one and number two engines; and prior to landing, a third engine was malfunctioning. Combating thunderstorms, icing, and turbulence, Captain King safely landed the aircraft despite a sleet-covered runway and a 70-degree crosswind with gusts to 33 knots. By demonstrating exceptional airmanship and professional competence, Captain King not only saved the crew and passengers from serious injury or death, but also saved a valuable aircraft and its cargo. In overcoming the many obstacles encountered and averting a major aircraft accident, Captain King reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
