CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: Vietnam
MODEL: UH-1D
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Donald Kent, Warrant Officer, W1, United States Army, 175th Aslt Hel Co, Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 25 March 1968 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Warrant Officer Kent distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of a UH-1D helicopter during an enemy attack upon the Long Hiep outpost. The outpost was in danger of being overrun and was in dire need of reinforcements and ammunition. The only method of resupply to the beleaguered outpost was via air. Warrant Officer Kent unhesitatingly volunteered to fly the mission. As he approached the landing zone, his aircraft received intense enemy automatic weapons fire, yet he expertly negotiated a downwind landing, dropped off his cargo, and remained in order to evacuate the wounded. After this first run was completed, it was determined that two more would be needed to insure that the outpost was adequately supplied with personnel and ammunition. Warrant Officer Kent courageously delivered 15 reinforcements, supplies and ammunition, and evacuated 13 wounded soldiers, all while under fierce enemy fire. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
