Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Donald E. Kark for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in the European Theater of Operations on 20 August 1944. Lieutenant Kark was leading an element in an armed reconnaissance mission in the area of the Seine River when enemy transportation units were sighted near a river crossing. Although the enemy convoy was protected by anti-aircraft fire, Lieutenant Kark dive-bombed the enemy units causing damage and confusion. Continuing his attacks, disregarding the fact that his plane had been damaged in the first encounter, Lieutenant Kark led his squadron in several other attacks. His vision was impaired by a spray of oil on his windshield, and weather conditions were adverse and hazardous, but with undaunted courage and tenacity, Lieutenant Kark fought until his ammunition was exhausted. His superior flying skill and determination are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Army Air Force.
