Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer Warrant Officer Phillip E. Ide for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Ide distinguished himself by exceptional valorous action on 31 January 1968, while serving as Aircraft Commander on a UH-1H helicopter during an enemy mortar and rocket attack near Hue, Republic of Vietnam. When an enemy unit attacked the base camp with mortars and rockets, Warrant Officer Ide exposed himself to the enemy fire and flew his helicopter out of the area. As he called back he noticed enemy mortar positions and immediately engaged and destroyed them with the help of his machine gunner. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
