CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT:  Vietnam

Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain William F. Hughes for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in Laos. Captain Hughes distinguished himself on 27 February 1971 while serving as Co-pilot and Gunner of an AH-1G armed helicopter in support of Army of the Republic of Vietnam combat troops in Laos. While escorting resupply and medical evacuation aircraft into numerous landing zones, Captain Hughes assaulted and silenced enemy gun positions despite the anti-aircraft fire directed at his helicopter. Although his aircraft sustained several hits, he continued to place suppressive fire on enemy emplacements, enabling the other helicopters to medically evacuate and resupply besieged Army of the Republic of Vietnam combat troops. His actions contributed greatly to the completion of the mission. Captain Hughes' outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
