Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Phillip T. Hoza for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action, above and beyond the call of duty. First Lieutenant Hoza distinguished himself while serving as Pilot of an armed helicopter in support of a rescue mission of the crew of an aircraft which was shot down at a friendly outpost surrounded by a large enemy force. The outpost was also a smoke screen to help shield the rescue aircraft from the enemy fire, he placed accurate fire on the enemy positions. On the third and final attempt the rescue ship completed the extraction. This extraction would have been impossible without First Lieutenant Hoza's devastating cover fire. He was directly responsible for the successful completion of this mission. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
