Citation:  1.) The Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism while participating in aerial flight during military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam on 31 August 1970. Specialist Horsch distinguished himself while serving as a crew chief of a UH-1H helicopter during a mission to extract two rangers and the crew members of a downed helicopter in Thua Thien Province, Republic of Vietnan. While approaching the downed aircraft, Specialist Horsch's aircraft came under intense enemy fire and was forced to return to Camp Eagle to rig ladders for the extrication. After several extraction attempts Specialist Horsch's aircraft maneuvered in to pick up the last ranger. As the ranger grabbed hold of the bottom rung on the ladder, the aircraft departed the area. When the ranger began slipping off the ladder, Specialist Horsch climbed down the ladder and held the ranger with both hands until his aircraft reached a safe area. His actions were instrumental in saving the ranger's life. Specialist Horsch's heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 17th Cavalry, and the United States Army.
