Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Colonel Robert B. Holt for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty. Lieutenant Colonel Holt distinguished himself by exceptionally meritorious achievement while serving as Commanding Officer, 73rd Aviation Company (Surveillance Airplane). His insistence upon and untiring efforts to obtain the highest degree of professionalism and flight competence within his unit resulted in an outstanding record of successful mission completion. He personally flew many missions in order to better assess the requirements placed on his pilots. He demonstrated his leadership, foresight, and valor when his aircraft was downed by enemy fire during one such flight. Upon receipt of word that one of his aircraft had been downed, he immediately rushed to the area in which the action had occurred and organized the search and rescue attempt. Although the rescue attempt proved unsuccessful, Lieutenant Colonel Holt established methods that will be of great assistance in future operations. His leadership ability was demonstrated in the recent movement of his unit to a new base. Through his guidance and coordination, the largest aviation company in the world was moved without incident. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
