CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: -
MODEL: A-6
Citation: 1.) The Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a pilot of a jet aircraft, attached to Attack Squadron Eighty-Five, embarked in USS KITTY HAWK (CVA 6 during a boldly planned and perfectly executed visual strike against the heavily defended Ninh Binh railroad bypass bridge, on 21 January 1967. Lieutenant Hodge led a section of A-6 aircraft to the target, detaching from the main element at coast-in. Through outstanding airmanship requiring precise timing during extreme evasive maneuvering he led his flight to the target despite being hit by enemy anti-aircraft artillery fire. Lieutenant Hodge aggressively and accurately maneuvered his aircraft to the desired roll-in point and into a perfect run, scoring direct hits and destroying sections of the bridge. Lieutenant Hodge's aeronautical skill, leadership and courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
