Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Timmy L. Hines for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. First Lieutenant Hines distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Aircraft Commander of a troop-carrying helicopter operating in the U Minh Forest area of Kien Giang Province. When a gunship was shot down and troops were needed to secure the ship, First Lieutenant Hines volunteered for the mission. His ship began to take sporadic small arms fire, as he neared the landing zone. Entering a high speed approach, the entire flight suddenly became the target for a storm of enemy fire. As the air became filled with rockets and automatic weapons fire, First Lieutenant Hines decided to continue his descent to the ground to insure that the mission would be accomplished. Holding his aircraft steady he allowed the soldiers to safely depart the aircraft. He initiated a high speed, low level departure from the area. The intrepid actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
